The actual game begins when the dealer deals two cards from the shoe to each player. (Note that while any number of people can bet on the game, only two actually play.) Now that the cards are dealt, let's examine how the values of the cards are tabulated.

Value of the cards
The object of Baccarat is to have a hand that adds up to nine. 10s and any face cards are all worth zero. Ace cards are worth one. Two through nines are worth the face value. Jokers mean you forgot to take them out of the deck. "Rules of Draw and Stud Poker" means you should go to a different dealer. In Baccarat, unlike Blackjack, you do not bust if you go over the target number. Instead, the first digit is dropped. Thus, if you have 13, the first digit is dropped and you have a lousy 3.
